Creality Ender 3 V3 SE vs KE: Key Differences
The SE has a 2500 mm/s2 acceleration limit and an SD-only workflow; the KE adds Wi-Fi, a 300 C hotend, and an 8000 mm/s2 ceiling.
The Creality Ender 3 V3 SE vs KE decision is simpler than the names suggest. Both are 220 x 220 mm open-frame bed slingers sharing the Sprite direct-drive extruder and CR Touch plus strain-gauge levelling. The KE adds a linear rail on X, a 60 W ceramic hotend rated to 300 C, Klipper-based firmware with Wi-Fi and a 4.3-inch touchscreen, and an acceleration ceiling of 8000 mm/s² instead of 2500 mm/s². Creality’s store currently lists the SE at $199 and the KE at $259, against launch prices of $199 and $279 in Creality’s own three-way comparison. If you print PLA and PETG from an SD card and never open a config file, the SE is enough. If you want Wi-Fi, input shaping, 300 C or a machine you can SSH into, the $60 gap buys more than it costs.

What 2500 vs 8000 mm/s² actually changes
Acceleration, not max speed, decides print time. Distance to reach a speed is v² / 2a. The SE needs 12.5 mm to hit 250 mm/s at 2500 mm/s² and 12.5 mm to stop, so any move under 25 mm never reaches its headline speed, and most perimeters on a 220 mm bed are shorter than that. The KE reaches its 300 mm/s typical speed in 5.6 mm at 8000 mm/s², so far more of each layer runs at speed.
Melt rate caps speed too. At 0.2 mm layers and a 0.42 mm line, 180 mm/s is 15 mm³/s and 300 mm/s is 25 mm³/s. Neither product page publishes a volumetric flow rating, but the 60 W heater and bi-metal heatbreak exist to sustain the second figure, and the SE’s standard hotend is why Creality quotes 180 mm/s as typical. Treat 180 mm/s and 2500 mm/s² as the SE’s working numbers and 300 mm/s with 5000 to 8000 mm/s² as the KE’s.
High acceleration on a bed slinger excites ringing, because the mass moving in Y includes the bed, plate and part. The KE ships with input shaping on, but the Tom’s Hardware KE review notes the accelerometer is not included; Creality “programmed a one-size fits all setting” that did “a decent job” on its test prints. Creality sells the ADXL345 Vibration Compensation Sensor for the KE at $10, and its Measuring Resonances doc walks through TEST_RESONANCES AXIS=X and SHAPER_CALIBRATE. Order it with the printer. Print quality in published reviews
The Tom’s Hardware SE review printed a 3DBenchy under Speed Boat Rules (2 walls, 3 top and bottom layers, 10 % grid infill, 0.25 mm layers, 0.5 mm line width) in 41 minutes with “no ringing or layer shifts”, crediting the capped acceleration. A string-art model took 5 hours 51 minutes at 180 mm/s and 0.2 mm layers with some wisps. Its one listed con is the PC-coated plate.
The KE review printed Maker’s Muse Clearance Castle in 1 hour 57 minutes on Creality Print’s default 0.2 mm profile with clean bridging and “a bit of wisps”; its cons are the missing accelerometer and a limited Klipper front end. TechRadar’s KE review rates print quality excellent, calls dimensional accuracy “its only slight weakness”, and notes the open frame limits ABS despite the 300 C hotend. Read that as: faster with equal or better surface finish, but 300 C buys PETG-CF, ASA on a draft-free desk and nylon from a dry box, not chamber-dependent materials.
Tom’s Hardware notes the KE’s textured PEI holds PETG and TPU without glue stick, while the SE’s PC sheet is the part reviewers keep flagging. Budget a textured PEI sheet for the SE if you print much PETG, and work through Creality Bed Leveling, First Layers, and Extrusion Tuning before blaming the filament.
Software and the tinkering ceiling
The SE runs Marlin-based firmware, takes files from an SD card only, and is driven from a knob. Tom’s Hardware frames the missing Wi-Fi as a feature for anyone keeping printers off the network, but it also means no remote monitoring, no upload from the slicer, and no input shaping without a Sonic Pad or a full Klipper conversion.
The KE runs Creality OS, “based on the popular Klipper firmware” per the product page, with Wi-Fi, LAN printing and the Creality Cloud app. The stock front end is Creality’s own, which is what Tom’s Hardware means by “limited”. The fix is documented: Settings, then “Root account information”, accept the warning, SSH in, and run Guilouz’s helper script as OctoEverywhere’s guide describes; it puts Fluidd on port 4408 and Mainsail on 4409. From there it is a normal Klipper machine, and the ADXL345 walkthrough on KlipperLab is the same procedure the KE’s docs describe.
Both printers have profiles in OrcaSlicer’s bundled Creality.json, each with 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm nozzle variants, so neither locks you into Creality Print.
Starting settings that respect each machine
SE: keep the stock 180 mm/s and 2500 mm/s²; raising acceleration without shaping trades time for ringing on every corner. Use 3 walls, 0.2 mm layers, and slow the outer wall to about 60 mm/s. The Sprite is direct drive, so retraction belongs well under 1 mm; confirm with a retraction tower rather than copying Bowden-era 5 mm values. KE: Creality’s 300 mm/s and 8000 mm/s² are usable once the shaper is calibrated with the ADXL345; before that, cap acceleration near 5000 mm/s² and check a ringing tower. On both, run a temperature tower per spool, because a 60 W heater at 300 mm/s and a standard hotend at 180 mm/s will not want the same nozzle temperature for the same PLA.
Who should buy which
Buy the SE for a $199 PLA, PETG and TPU machine at 180 mm/s with an SD-card workflow: a classroom set, a second printer for batch parts, or a first machine for someone who will never open a config file. Add a textured PEI sheet.
Buy the KE for the same footprint at roughly twice the throughput, Wi-Fi, 300 C for PETG-CF and ASA, and a Klipper host you can root and extend: a small Etsy operation where print hours are the bottleneck, or anyone who intends to tune input shaping, pressure advance and flow rather than accept defaults. Add the $10 ADXL345 at checkout.
